The Newburyport Montessori School is dedicated to creating, nurturing and sustaining a community of peace, respect and diversity in honor of the child.
Montessori education is based on a profound respect for children and a deep understanding of child development in all areas: academic, emotional, physical and social. As they develop skills in all areas of the curriculum, students in our program work independently, in small groups and one-on-one with a teacher. In a three year cycle, they have the opportunity to proceed at their own pace with the support of staff and classmates. As well as a strong academic program, we offer classes in Yoga, Art, Drama, Music, Spanish and Physical Education.
In 1907, Dr. Maria Montessori opened her first casa dei bambini (children's house) in Rome, Italy. Her approach to early childhood education developed naturally from her observations about the ways children learn and the kind of environment that fosters a love of learning. Many of the reforms that are being introduced in public education today, including an emphasis on multi-age grouping and self-directed learning, have their foundation in Montessori philosophy and methodology. Montessori designed a carefully sequenced set of concrete learning materials to meet the emerging cognitive needs of each age group. Educational areas include:
- Practical Life. Real Life Activities help children to care for themselves and their environment, to develop eye-hand coordination, concentration and attention to detail.
- Sensorial. Exercises help to refine the senses and to discriminate among sets of objects varying in size, dimension, texture, color, smell and sound.
- Language. Reading and writing skills are developed through an integrated approach using phonics, sight reading and whole language.
- Mathematics. Manipulative materials are used to develop skills in counting, sets, the decimal system, mathematical operations and geometry.
- Cultural Studies. The exploration of world cultures, geography, science and the arts.
The Newburyport Montessori School is a compassionate place where children, teachers and parents gather to celebrate the wonder of the universe in a supportive, peaceful way.
